In 1908 William Tatum bought land east of Wilson for $1,000; he turned it into an agricultural township which included parts of today's western edge of Wilson County as well as eastern portions now within Greensboro metropolitan area In 1916 Ira Skelton purchased some adjacent land west of present day Hwy 421 for $10 per acre (). He organized what would become known as the Agricultural Experiment Station (AES) thereon which continues operations to this day with support from both federal government funding through NSF and private donations alike Today AES has 6 acres designated as research & development land totaling over 100 acres! Wilson had its start when James Citty founded "Citty's Mill" which started up spinning cotton yarns out back on his property on 11/5/1835
