Wilson is a town in Wilson County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greensboro–High Point, NC Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded in 1822 by Scots-Irish Presbyterians led by Colonel John Broughton. It became a small farming village until the railroad arrived in 1865 and made Wilson an important center for trade and industry. The first school was built in 1871 and the first post office was established in 1876. A sawmill and gristmill were built around 1900 and 1930 respectively; they are now gone but their remains can still be seen along US Highway 421 near downtown Wilson. The town's economy changed when Interstate 85 arrived in 1990 and it lost its main trade highway status which limited access to jobs outside of town. Today, Wilson is home to several stores including J&J Mart #1 (the largest store), Two Bridges Coffee Roasters, Poultry Unlimited, China Garden Chinese Cuisine, KFC/Arby's/Pizza Hut/Denny's eateries as well as several churches including First Presbyterian Church (founded 1889), Second Baptist Church (founded 1907), Methodist Episcopal Zion church (1892) and Christ United Methodist Church (1910). According to the 2000 census, Wilson had a total population of 2,576.[2] As of 2010 it had 1,811 residents[3].

Wilson is a town in Wilson County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 3,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Charlotte–Mecklenburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what would become Wilson was James Witherspoon in 1792. By 1827, there were 10 families living in Wilson Township. In 1851, the United States Census counted 1,737 people living in Wilson Township and it had a population of 709. A year later, when white men began to arrive from Georgia and other parts of the South seeking new land to settle, they brought with them their traditional tools and implements of agriculture - axes, hoes, wagons and cars - which helped to change the face of farming in Wilson Township. A post office called "Witherspoon" was established in 1853; it continued operation until 1915. In 1870, Stonington Roads (later US 64) extended from downtown Winston-Salem east to intersect US 61 near present day Smithfield Road; this opened up more acreage for farming around town and increased business opportunities for farmers along US 64. The first schoolmaster in what would become Wilson was David Ritchie on October 12th 1861; he taught one class per week out of his home until December 1861 when he moved into a cabin across the road from Mr Fenton’s store where he taught school for three weeks each month before coming back home to teach again for two hours each evening during winter months). In 1865 Elisha Pate built a log cabin on Harmon’s Creek about two miles northeast of present day Witherspoon Cemetery which served as his farm house through 1918 until his death at age 91 years old). On November 15th 1886 ninety nine year old Mrs Jane Crouse built her residence on property northeast of present day Witherspoon Cemetery – this became her home until her death at age 96 years old). On October 2nd 1889 Grady Hinton erected an addition to his farm east side of Harmon’s Creek about four rods west from center line along current day roadside between Present Day Witherspoon Cemetery & Harmon’s Creek), serving as a grocery store that operated successfully until 1963 when it closed due to lack or interest by local residents) . The first post office located south off I-95 just south off exit 241B known then as “New Bern” was established on February 14th 1941 by Julius Denny with P O Box 8057 after selling supplies from his truck stop located north off I-95 just outside Exit 241B known then as “New Bern” .
