Wilson, North Carolina is a small town located in the eastern part of the U.S. state of North Carolina. The population was 7,362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Metropolitan Statistical Area and is also included within the Durham-Chapel Hill Combined Statistical Area. The name "Wilson" was given to the town by General James Wilson when he founded it in 1792 as a post on Catawba River for military purposes. The name may have come from an early settler's family name, Wilkins or Williamson, who were from England and immigrated to America in 1685. Wilson's father had been a colonel in British Army and his mother a dressmaker before arriving in America. In 1792, General James Wilson founded what became known as "the Springs," named after two springs that lay near his new home on Catawba River. There are still some evidence remaining of General James Wilson's original house and mill which stands today on NC Route 158 just outside of town limits adjacent to Interstate 75/ exit 404A (exit 403B). In 1814, during the War of 1812, Colonel John Smith built Fort Raleigh along Yadkin Creek to~~ protect American interests in that area against British Invasion forces seeking refuge inside Canada following their successful seizure of Yorktown Heights naval base east of Richmond Virginia - this event led to United States independence from Great Britain On March 3rd 1865 Union General Jubal Early crossed over Yadkin Creek Bridge into North Carolina while under cover of darkness heading towards Roanoke Island where he planned to capture Confederate general Robert E Lee at what would eventually become Appomattox Court House . Captain David Waddell supervised Early's crossing and ordered all boats ashore without warning anyone on board including many women and children who were boarded unceremoniously disembarking about 12 pm local time .. After landing several cannons were captured by Confederate troops prior to being burned but no other significant action occurred until nightfall when Confederate MajorGeneral Edmund Kirby Smith arrived with 10 cavalrymen expecting pursuit .. Early instead marched south through Johnston County sugar cane fields reached Appomattox Court House about 9 pm local time .... Lieutenant Colonel Thomas J McCready relieved Captain Waddell at Watchtower Hill later that evening .... US Cavalry units moved inland behind Cemetery Ridge during late afternoon hours ................... A possible Massacre took place at Cowpens Swamp near Lookout Mountain when order was given not to fire upon Federal Soldiers positioned there....... Many Confederates died or were taken prisoner ............. At approximately 4 am local time on April 9th 1865 Abraham Lincoln was shot by John Wilkes Booth while sitting in Ford’s Theater ...... Wilson Post Office closed its doors for good effective February 1st 1861 ................. In 1880 lumber business changed hands 2 times with mainline coming through Frederickville then leaving.............. Today much industry remains with large Scale Manufacturing such as Textile Mills Wilson has experienced various types OF Development over its history; these include: First Period:During the 1800s cattle ranching played an important role here; Second Period:During WW IIRobert E Lee came here looking for food because most food production left NC due to enemy bombing raids; Third Period:Since 1960 Wilson has seen steady growth due to manufacturing businesses moving into townspeople have helped keep pace lost jobs during past recession
