Robertson, arrived at what is now known as Goode’s Landing on Catawba River. They built a cabin and started trading with the local natives. The following year, they bought land from the Native American tribe and began cultivation of rice and other crops. In 1827, Alexander McDowell Powell came to Wilson from Tennessee with his family. He soon became involved in lumber cutting and farming around town. In 1830, he married Alice Wilkinson and founded a sawmill at Green Pond near present day Gaston Road. From this business, Powell created one of Wilson’s most important economic hubs during its early years. In 1838–39, Union troops burned down Powell’s mill while he was inside working on it; however, he quickly rebuilt it and continued production until 1840 when he sold it to Pemberton & McNeely for $10 thousand dollars cash plus five slaves). Over time, McDowell's mill became one of Wilson's most important businesses; it continues to operate today as Gaston Mills Incorporated (GMI). He also served as mayor of Winston-Salem from 1916 to 1918 and as governor of North Carolina from 1920 to 1924.
