Wilson was founded in 1871 by Edwin Wilson and his wife Anna. The town was named in honor of General William Tecumseh Sherman, the general who led the Union army during the American Civil War. Edwin Wilson enlisted in the Confederate Army and fought at Appomattox Court House. After the war, he returned to Wilson and began a family business that flourished for many years. In 1938, Edwin Wilson died and his wife continued to run the business alone until her death in 1984. Today, Edwin F.Wilson Jr., son of Edwin F.Wilson Sr., is president of Wilson-Smithers Company which manufactures cleaning supplies and other home products. The town has a population of over 10,000 residents and continues to thrive under the continued leadership of Mrs. Anna Wilson Smithers III (1914-2007). The city of Wilson is located about 25 miles southeast of Charlotte on I-95W between Raleigh and Durham. The municipal boundary line runs east/west just south of Interstate 85, making it part of Mecklenburg County as well as North Carolina’s 18th Congressional District (the seat held by Rep.(D) Don Beyer since 2003). As with most rural areas in North Carolina, there are no major highways running through or within town limits; instead, roads branch off various county routes which can be unpredictable or unConnectorized from one another making it difficult if not impossible to get around without help from locals or visitors. Wilson was founded in 1792 by Colonel James Wilson, who named it in honor of his friend and colleague Sir John Alexander Wilson. The town was chartered on April 14, 1792. It became a thriving community with a population of about 100 people in 1800. By 1860, the population had grown to 1,500 and the city had become an important center for trade and commerce. In 1871, Wilson was renamed Charlotte after Queen Charlotte of England.
