On December 14, 1868, the Wilson-Ligon area was the scene of one of the most dramatic gunfights in American history. A group of Confederate soldiers, led by Colonel James Longstreet, had invaded Union Territory and raided a couple of stores on Wilson's east side. The violence continued into the night as skirmishes ensued between both sides. At dawn on December 15, Union General Robert E. Lee arrived at Wilson to find that his forces were surrounded and vulnerable to attack. He ordered his men to start shooting at any Confederates who came within range. In just minutes, over 100 Confederate prisoners had been killed or captured, including Longstreet himself. The action has been called "the bloodiest battle in North Carolina."
Wilson is a town in Wilson County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,452 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Wilson County. The name "Wilson" comes from William Penn and was given to the town because it lay on his estate which he bought in 1786. The first white person to live in what is now Wilson County was James Robertson in 1786. He was a Scotch-Irishman who came to try and make a new life in America. When he found no land available for him, he built himself a cabin near what is now known as milepost 5 on US-8 south of Raleigh. This became the nucleus of what would become Wilsonville. In 1822, General Andrew Jackson moved his headquarters from Charlotte to nearby Research Triangle Park after winning the Battle of New Orleans. During this time, many diplomats and military officers lived and worked at Research Triangle Park including Robert E Lee and Ulysses S Grant. In 1828, four years after Jackson's death, Johnston moved his headquarters there from Raleigh because of its close proximity to Federal Military Headquarters (FEMA) located just outside Durham on Hillsborough Street. In 1851 John Coker settled around present day milepost 7 on NC 12 west of Hendersonville when goods traffic increased along that route during the early days of railroads reaching eastern North Carolina Wilson post office opened March 3rd 1865 with mail sent by stagecoach out of Hendersonville woolen goods were one era early travelers brought trade items such as flour and bacon into central North Carolina

Wilson was a small town in North Carolina, located on the eastern border of the state. It is now part of Wilson County. The population of Wilson at the time of its incorporation as a town was just over 100 people. The early history of Wilson is obscure, but it likely originated around 1748 when settlers from Georgia arrived in what is now Wilson County. They built a cabin near present-day Union Station and named their new community after General George Washington, who had recently been elected president. In 1864, during the American Civil War, Union General John Buford moved his headquarters to nearby Statesville for protection from Confederate forces massing along the border. Buford's military camp became known as "Wilson garrison." During the war, Wilson barracks accommodated more than 1,000 soldiers and their families. After the war ended, most of Wilson's residents decided to return home and rebuild. But a few families stayed to continue farming and ranching operations until 1925 when they were purchased by developer J C Swartzell and renamed Swartzell City. In that year, Swartzell City became an incorporated city with its own government under municipal law rather than the State Legislature which controlled Wilson at that time. Wilson experienced rapid growth during World War II due to demand from America's military personnel stationed in southern North Carolina. The population reached 515 people by 1951; however, because many men serving in Korea or Japan chose not to come home after hostilities ended, this number fell rapidly to just 52 by 1955 when all service members had returned home. I n 1961-1963 three businesses operated out of two storefronts on Main Street: First Presbyterian Church (now Pembroke United Methodist) served as our parish Chapel; Second Baptist Church functioned as our social hall; while we maintained our library services out of one room on upper floor in old Masonic Temple across from post office). Many young couples got married there before moving away for college or other opportunities... For much of these years I was Manager/Library Director/ Superintendant Of Schools (all thru first grade thru 8th grade)... Life wasn't easy then but it sure was better than living behind those high school walls!
