In 1943, following attacks on several military posts across the state by Japanese nationals disguised as GI's (GIs), the local paper reported that "the Negroes are organizing themselves into homespun militias" to protect their countrymen from further violence . On September 20th 1942 Major General Ulysses S Grant issued Executive Order No.–5209 which limited racial discrimination in Armed Forces Jobs within limits prescribed by law; this order led to much public protest from many groups including Jackie Robinson who had just become an Army veteran When World War II ended there were few civilian jobs available for African Americans so they began working primarily in manufacturing or agriculture; however due to economic prosperity brought about by postwar reconstruction efforts many African Americans started moving back into town while others established new businesses There are still a number of small businesses located around town that cater specifically to black customers such as: Gullah Coffee & Tea House (owned and operated by Ernestine Morehouse since 1978), Jubilee Baptist Church (founded 1922), Good Friday Sales Store (opened in 1951) and Community Service Committee grocery store (opened 1959).
