At that time, the area was part of South Carolina and Ammunition Manufacturing Company was organized to produce munitions for the Union. The company built a factory on the site of present-day J.C. Higgins Armory and began production of firearms and smokeless powder. In 1865, Confederate forces sacked the plant, leaving behind a significant amount of equipment and stockpiles of ammo. The company continued operations after the war but lost its financial stability and ceased production in 1868. Ammunition manufacturing resumed in Wilson in 1870 but as times changed so did weapons requirements; by 1880 all shooting powders were replaced witharmor piercing rounds. The government of Wilson is a township-county government with a mayor and six trustees. Adams Creek flows through the town and provides water for many local businesses. The first settler in Wilson was James Fenton who settled on land that now includes much of downtown Wilson. In 1814, William Bowers erected a log cabin near what is now Winton Avenue and built an additional cabin on what became known as Manor Road. James Fenton's son John Fenton tilled land adjacent to his father's farm and farmed until 1820 when he sold his land to George Washington Hardin for $2 per acre. In 1827, Hardin purchased 640 acres from Elisha Dickson for $25 per acre, making him one of the largest landowners in Northwest Carolina at that time. In 1830, Hardin sold his 640 acres to Samuel Proctor for $50 per acre which made him one of the largest landowners in Johnston County as well as Henderson County overall. From 1830-1834, Samuel Proctor served as President pro tempore of Johnston County Court while also serving as manager of proctorsville millinery shop run by his wife Anna Proctor (née McConnell). From 1837-1841, Samuel Proctor served as Mayor of Wilson while also holding other offices such as justice of peace and postmaster general during this time period. In 1840–1843, Reverend John Sutherlin Methodist Episcopal pastor traveled throughout Johnston and Henderson Counties preaching Christianity to Native Americans living in these areas under white authority before returning home to America via steamboat on Valentine's Day on April 14th 1840 from Raleigh where he had been traveling since January 9th that year with missionaries named John Hance and Drury Page among others (now known collectively as The Mountain View Missionary Baptist Church). Reverend Sutherlin delivered religious services at various homes along Manor Road including those owned by Revs James Fenton (father), John Fenton (son), Anna Proctor (wife of Samuel Proctor), Ebenezer Ashe (brother-in-law) Sarah Ashe(sister), Robert Cato(brother)and Jeremiah Smith(uncle). On or about February 11th 1841 Reverend Sutherlin preached sermon at what later became known locally as "The Mansion" which stood east off present day Winton Avenue between Second Street South & Third Street North just north Of Depot Square across from First National Bank Building/Old Post Office building site currently occupied by PNC bank building/mailroom operated by FedEx Ground operations since September 2015) after spending two weeks visitingfriends&relatives around hereabouts enroutehomefromGeorgiaOnFebruary11th1841.(alsoknownasFayetteHouse.) Shot was fired from bows and arrows, but it was difficult to keep track of where each round went due to its inaccuracy. To address this issue, John Winthrop invented a new type of projectile called a fuse explosive . This projectile consisted of two pieces: the base which was shaped like a cone, and the top which had an explosive charge placed inside it. When fired, these two pieces would detonate together creating an effective hole in whatever was firing at them. This new projectile proved successful enough that Winthrop decided to create his own artillery company named The Arsenal Company in 1795 ADVERTISEMENT . With this new company in business, Winthrope began manufacturing shells for cannons as well as other weapons . The early 20th century saw significant technological advancements within weaponry that eventually led to the development of ammunition systems such as shell casings and propellant charges . In 2015 Hebert Hall came under renovation which included new Athletic Facilities Planning & Design work that culminated in completion of Phase One last fall/ winter season Wilson has several memorable moments including being birthplace for two U.S Presidents: George Washington Carver who was born here on January 16th 1837; Woodrow Wilson who served two terms as President beginning on November 4th 1913 until his death on October 6th 1919; Commander-in-Chief Barack Obama who attended law school at UNC before being elected 44th President of America in 2008
