Wilson is a city in Durham County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 25,614 at the 2010 census. It is the eighth-largest city in Durham County and the largest city on the Duke University campus. The area that now makes up Wilson was first settled by Europeans in 1775 as part of what is now Raleigh–Durham county. At that time, it was known as "New Bern." The town's name derived from Englishman Nicholas Wilson (1685–1753), who had come to North Carolina in 1751 as part of a large group of pioneers led by Colonel John Sevier. In 1815, when Raleigh became an independent republic under James Kenedy, New Bern became its capital and Wilson became its second capital. In 1892, Wilson incorporated as a dry town and began selling alcoholic beverages; this venture proved unsuccessful and he discontinued sales in 1898. A new water system for the city was completed in 1904; however, the original pipeline network never got full use because manufacturing began moving out of Durham into other counties during World War II and thereafter production substantially decreased until 1984 when it resumed slowly but surely growth due to increasing demand for drinking water from residents and businesses within the downtown core only sporadically interrupted throughout much of that decade preceding2005whendowntownand mostoftheoutsideareafellintocommunismoreinvolvingwith extensivebuildingprogrammes Wilson has been consistently among America’s fastest-growing cities over recent years with populations expanding at rates above 2 percent annually since 2000 while poverty rates have decreased significantly (from 30 percent in 2000 to 12 percent today). John C. Wilson, who was born in North Carolina on December 12, 1824, was a U.S. Representative from North Carolina and the eighth Governor of North Carolina (1875-1881). Wilson is best known for his tenure as governor and for his role in creating the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He also served as chairman of the Democratic National Committee during World War I and 1920. Wilson died in Chapel Hill on October 1, 1924.

The first white man to live in the area was John Kinney, who built a cabin on the banks of the Raccoon River. In 1814, Wilson was renamed for General James Wilson, a hero of the American Revolution and one of its most influential figures. The town grew rapidly and by 1827 it had a population of over 400 people. By 1870, Wilson had become an important stop on the Underground Railroad network because of its strategic location near Surry County's major cotton plantations. In 1886, Wilson became part of North Carolina when it was created as a state within the United States.
