Wilmington is a city in the U.S. state of North Carolina, located on the Wilmington Peninsula. As of the 2010 census, the population was 78,326. The city is part of the Raleigh-Durham metropolitan area and is one of the most populous cities in North Carolina. At its peak in 1820 it had a population of 120,000 people and by 1860 it had reached 150,000 people. It declined thereafter until reunification in 1980 resulting in a growth rate of over 20%. The economic development has been based largely on two industries: shipbuilding and engineering services. The city government has done extensive work to make Wilmington an attractive place for businesses and residents to live and raise families. Wilmington began as an Algonquin village called "Winchester" on what is now called Jesus Nazarene Boulevard at present day Wilson Boulevard just east of downtown Raleigh. In 1599 Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto discovered what would become Wilmington while exploring inland North Carolina waters near Cape Fear River; he named it San Salvador de la Vera Cruz (St Saviour's Fortress). English traders founded a town here in 1614 under the name "Bladenboro". Spanish colonists renamed it San Gabriel de las Salinas (Saint Gabriel's Springs) because they believed that Quetzalcoatl had visited there before landing hisfeathered serpent at this location during his long journey from Mexico City to Tenochtitlan about 15 years earlier; we know this locality today as Wilmington! A second town site was established here by Dutch settlers who called their new community New Amsterdam after their newly acquired colony from England - also situated on what is now known as Newark Avenue adjacent to King's Chapel Cemetery! By 1682 both towns were abandoned due to disease brought over by Indian explorers crossing through America via Maryland/Delaware Bay...In 1718 proprietor John Watts erected at Tryon Square (now Civic Center Plaza) one of North Carolina's first brick buildings -A large three story red brick structure with an octagon shaped roof completed December 5th 1718 which still stands today – marking one of early commercial successes for this fledgling settlement! This building served as headquarters for several local governments including Towne Commissioners Court, Borough Councils, County Courts & Magistrates' Courts prior to becoming the seat – eventually moved from its original site next door at High Street between Graham Street & Tryon Square during much recent growth – finally occupying current site within City limits opposite Post Office since 1898!
