The history of Wilmington began with English settlers who arrived in what is now Wilmington during the time of King George II of Great Britain. These colonists were motivated by land grants that had been given to them by Sir Walter Raleigh along the coast of North Carolina. By 1768, John and Mary Wilmington had moved to what is now downtown Wilmington from their original location on Catawba Island because they saw opportunity there for development as a port town due to its excellent harbor conditions combined with its rich soil which was fertile enough to support agriculture but not toosooo swampy that reliable transportation could be built on it (Fletcher 1959). The Willemings started out trading goods such as salt water fish and slaves back then which probably accounted for their success since they were able to build up some capital quickly (Fletcher 1959). In 1784-85, Queen Anne granted two more grants totaling 26 acres (10 hectares) near where Market Street meets Tryon Street northeastward from Fort Fisher Ferry Landing on Cape Fear River (Galloway 1911). This grant added much needed land between Duck Creek/Creek Road on one side and Tryon Street/Market Street on the other side making it easier for white farmers living east of I-95 accessible for agricultural production west of I-95 (Galloway 1911; Fletcher 1959). One result was increased shipping traffic through Dover Strait because traders could bring goods inland rather than having to navigate around headlands filled with swamps or reaching dangerously high levels at low tide (Hatcher 1957; Pemberton 1992; Sheppard 2002; cf Fletcher 1959: pgs 3-4). By 1800 About 100 settlers lived in what is today downtowns when portions of Catawba Island were sold off during peace negotiations following America's Revolutionary War against Great Britain On July 15th 1800 colonists erected a small stone cross just south eastof present day Meeting House Square after planting wheat next door provided seedlings under direction from Capt Thomas Matthews’ farmstead “near this spot” accordingto(Pemberton1992 pg 36) . They also laid down streets northward from Meeting House square thenceforth called Market street until eventuallyumber grew so dense within 6 blocks that another name hadto be chosen acordingtothis growing metropolis soon becomingknown as "Wilmington" whichedelivered new hope tounderlying economy while still maintaining control oyer government decisions thruProvidence Plantation(Fletcher1959 pg3) .
