On December 13th Jones received news that local Cherokee Indians were raiding several plantations around Roanoke Island; accordingly, he ordered his forces to attack these Indian villages rather than wait until they returned home before engaging them On January 5th1739 at 4 PM some eight hundred British regulars under General Edward Braddock marched upstream from what is now Gaston County towards Chowan Point without any previous notice or warning against local militias led by militia captain Arthur Steed who resided within four miles radius including both Presbyterian Churches located just outside town limits along Boyd Street - barely able to keep up with advancing British regulars who seemed almost unstoppable Captain Steed organized approximately two hundred men among whose nucleus formed Companies A & B which successfully fought off repeated charges by LtCol Braddock's army numbering upwardof twenty thousand soldiers over nine days resulting finally in total defeat for Captain Steed who was forced march all the way back upstream again under heavy fire leaving behind more than seventy dead skeletons still lying scattered throughout Chowan Point today
