The subsequent waves of immigration that followed gave new life to old boundaries between town and country - until suddenly everything changed with World War II when millions of Americans poured into Wilmington looking for work wartime production sites such as shipyards or aircraft factories. Afterward, downtown business slowed but redevelopment began in earnest including large housing projects that continue to this day The decline of manufacturing throughout most of America during the 1990s led to a significant increase in joblessness among African American men living in Wilmington – one of America's fastest-growing communities outside major coastal cities such as San Francisco or New York City.. Despite these challenges, development continued apace: new office buildings have been built downtown since before 2000; several high-rise apartments have been developed near Marine Park Boulevard; retail establishments are expanding rapidly around Wilson Boulevard; restaurants (including several national chains) have mushroomed all around Interstate 95; yacht slips are becoming popular with boaters thanks to increased boat traffic eastward from nearby piers; and more than two dozen local colleges offer programs leading up to professional degrees in business administration or health care management... [These] dramatic changes illustrate just how quickly things can change when one looks out across downtown Wilmington toward Bank Street where truckloads of containerized meal products destined for WalMart drive by every morning... [This] vibrant skyline view masks some very serious issues facing our community: For instance, nearly half a million people live below poverty line while almost three thousand businesses closed between 2001 and 2006 due to economic downturn… even though adult rates have not budged since then!

In 1814 Wilmington became part of Confederate Statesof America during the American Civil War; but following Reconstruction it regained its status as an important port on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean until after World War II when it declined in importance relative to other coastal cities such as Norfolk and Jacksonville Beach
