In 1871, Delaware County was created from portions of Surry and Dare counties; Wilmington became an independent city within Delaware County on January 1st, 1931. On September 11th 2001Wilmington played host to America's worst terrorist attack when al-Qaeda bombers hijacked four commercial airliners and flew them into New York City's World Trade Center – killing hundreds and injuring thousands more – while also crashing into Pennsylvania Station in downtown Manhattan (see Twin Towers Attack). The terrorist attacks shook America to its core and left many people displaced: More than 2 million people were affected by 9/11 alone, making it one of America’s largest peacetime disasters ever documented at that time or any time since Reconstruction era.[1] The resulting fear created significant security challenges for local traders and residents who had to deal with increased scrutiny from federal authorities following trauma similar to that experienced nine months earlier during Hurricane Katrina.[2] To this day large numbers homeless have taken up residence near Ground Zero following 9/11,[3] a legacy which continues today as demonstrations against President Donald Trump’s proposed travel ban continue throughout New York City

This case became known as “The Parking Lot Incident” because it highlighted how easy it is for people living in Wilmington to get citations and spend time in jail without consequence. Despite these controversies, Wilmington remains an important cultural center for North Carolina and is home to many major businesses and institutions including Stonewall Jackson High School, which enrolls more than 4200 students from across the state; The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; and PNC Arena where the NBA’s Charlotte Hornets play their games.
