In the early 1800s, Wilmington was a thriving port town with a population of over 25,000. It was also the heart of the cotton industry and one of the most prosperous cities in America. The city’s Commercial District was home to a number of prestigious businesses including Woolworth’s grocery store, Carr & Andrews locksmithing shop, and J.C. Penney’s department store. The city had a well-developed firearms trade and many civilians and soldiers alike used weapons to protect themselves and their families during times of peace or war. Wilmington got its start as an outpost on the then-new Carolina River system. In 1775, British forces burned down part of Wilmington while numbering about 10 men under Lt.-Colonel John Sullivan. However, this first episode in Wilmington’s history did not deter locals from founding another community on what is now known as “Sullivan Street” adjacent to present day First Ward on March 3, 1776 byofiier George Washington with the help of Major General Nathanael Greene (later Ulysses S Grant). At that time Wilmington boasted 1,500 residents and counted among its citizens James Wilson (the future president), Daniel Boone (the surveyor general who helped lay out Raleigh), John Marshall (a signer of the Declaration of Independence), Thomas Paine (the author who penned “The Rights OF Man”) and others key players in American history. During World War II Wilmington became one of America's largest naval ports with more than 100 warships based there at various points along both coasts; it also served as an important training ground for Navy personnel during World War II as well as later conflicts such as Vietnam. After hostilities ended in 1945, Wilmington experienced several years Of economic stability before slowly declining due to changing social trends and competition from other large North Carolina cities such as Raleigh And Chapel Hill which began experiencing rapid growth during that period.
