Weddington is a small town in Stanly County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 589 at the 2010 census. Weddington is part of the Raleigh–Durham metropolitan area. Weddington was founded by Welsh settlers in 1800 and named for John Wedgwood, an Englishmen who had settled in that area in 1740. The original white settlement here came about because of the abundance of coalmines nearpresent-day Weddington. Coal became a major industry here after the opening of the Pee Dee Railroad in 1825. The first post office in Weddington was established on November 3, 1827. It under the name "Rocky Mount." In 1830, it changed its name to "Weddington." The first store opened here on May 2, 1836; it was operated by Jno Fenton & Bros., a group of Scotsmen who were instrumental in developing this community as an agricultural center. In 1840, Reverend Wm Hogg opened what would become one of North Carolina's most famous Methodist churches – First Methodist Church – here. This congregation continued growing until 1954 when it merged with another large Methodist church to create Chapel Hill Bible and Tract Society (later Baptist) Churches USA Incorporated (NBCUniversal). This evangelical denomination played a significant role in creating both local businesses and social organizations such as Sunday School and youth groups which continue to play an important role today among wedgintonians. Reverend Hogg also helped found what would eventually become UNC Chapel Hill which he helpedfoundback then too!
