Weddington is a town in Cumberland County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 2,491 at the 2010 census. Weddington is the home of the Weddington Historical Museum. Weddington began as an Indian village on a Creek farmstead near present-day White Sands Lake. The first settler in what is now Weddington was Captain John Heard who built a cabin and land grant in 1799 on the banks of the Weldon River. In 1814, General Andrew Jackson and his army passed through Weddington while on their way to fight against Native American forces near Fort Monroe. When Jackson's army halted at Harnett's Mill for lunch, local women cooked pork chops for their officers and shared with them among themselves before returning to their homes. The town was incorporated as a borough in 1872 by act of the General Assembly. From 1917 to 1949 it functioned as a part of Morganton. On July 1, 1949, it became its own separate municipality under special law governing changes made during World War II which led to increased social tensions within municipalities because many residents had been drafted into military service outside their homes country of origin or were living in areas newly occupied by Japan after victory over America in World War II. After years of debate over whether to annex neighboring towns (Morganton voted against annexation), Weddinton voters approved annexation on November 3rd, 1957 by voting 98% in favor with one abstention from individual resident Wilfredo Santos being cited as the reason for no opposition from Morganton officials when annexation occurred two days later effective November 5th under state law proposed by then Governor Fayette Campbell Jr.. Weddington officially become an independent city under City Charter No.#2 created December 12th 1959 and ratified May 15th 1960 upon passage by both houses of the General Assembly; this charter remains operative today due to some amendments made since its ratification including expanding vehicle parking regulations which have caused some Keepers Of The peace officers to evict residents without warning during Winter months In recognition of its status as an independently operated city which has maintained much civic pride and stability despite several challenges experienced within Morganton throughout its history including multiple acts of arson targeting municipal property dating back more than 50 years ago; Mayor Tommy Fralic elected to receive City Medal honors from North Carolina Municipal League (NCML) honoring distinguished achievement within municipally Owned & ControlledCommunity Services annually since 2006; Tue/Fri 9am - 4pm at City Hall located off US 21 just south of exits 16 & 17 Junction Rd
