Weddington, North Carolina is a town in Davie County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,472 at the 2010 census. Weddington is part of the Charlotte metropolitan area. The history of Weddington can be traced back to 1827 when it was founded as a small settlement on the Yadkin River by James Weddington and his family. In 1865, Weddington became the capital of Davie County after being named for George Washington's presidential home in Virginia. In 1907, following the creation of Wake County,Weddington became its second county seat. On December 12, 1912, during World War I,[2] USS Tuells (DD-436) torpedoed and sunk wedдmington lightship SS Yadkin in an action against German submarines off coast of Wilmington[3]). Weddington has been known for its peach orchards since before white men arrived in this area. A date that comes closest to our current understanding is September 16th 1775 when Capt John Smith discovered land east of what is now Weddington which he called "The Pines". He gave this location to his son-in-law Thomas Hicks who renamed it "Weddington" after himself and wife Anna Weddinckhefer Hinson in 1776 because they had moved from Brunswick County where they had been living with their parents until then. It not until 1800 that farmers started growing crops there including corn and peas butchers were still slaughtering deer hereabouts so early settlers did some hunting as well! In 1827 James Weddinton founded a small village on the Yadkin River near present day Tryonville; however all activity ceased shortly thereafter due to lack of resources. By 1865 it had become the capital of Davie County following its name given by George Washington's Presidential Home at Mount Vernon Va., just northwest of Raleigh NC - soon followed by Wake County (1907). After WWI Weddington experienced rapid growth with many new residents coming ashore seeking opportunity and adventure – making it one very busy town! Today’s citizens reflect many different cultures which have blended together over time including African American (of course), Native American & Caucasian heritage as well as numerous Irish & Italian immigrants who have contributed greatly to our community fabric over time – makingWeddington one very special place!
On July 3, 1861, Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House in Virginia. North Carolina had been a part of the Confederacy from 1861-1865 and had also seceded on April 12, 1865. On September 24, 1865, North Carolina was admitted to the Union as a state.
