Scope mounts have been a part of the Weddington community for over sixty years. The first scope mount was built in 1922 by local farmer, Fenton W. Cramer. This mount consisted of an old post with a cross piece that was affixed to the top of a young tree. It was used to view the surrounding countryside from his farmhouse. In 1951, Mr. and Mrs. Gail Averill donated their home and land to the Weddington Community Center in order to provide space for future civic events and activities. This donation allowed for the construction of the present day Scope Mounts Pavilion which is currently used for public viewing opportunities as well as storage purposes. The popularity of scopes has continued to grow over time and today, there are many different types and styles available on the market that can be used by anyone in any location. Scope mounts are still a popular choice among shooters due to their easy installation and ability to adjust target distance while keeping accuracy within reach.
