The post office closed in 1984 and email service replaced it on October 1, 1985 when the original phone line failed In 1990, Weddington annexed neighboring towns of Forest City to form a new city called Weddington-Forest City which has since grown considerably due to economic development around its airport which provides cargo transportation for many businesses including Coca Cola and PepsiCo as well as services such as engineering support for Fayetteville's hospital complex In 2006, voting passed an ordinance approving annexation of adjacent unincorporated areas including Spring Lake from White Rock Creek Township to create an even larger city with a population of over 100,000 people Weddington is located at (35.827486,-79.329469). According to the USGS National Map, it takes up most of what once constituted Ashe County east of I-85 (including parts now within Charlotte) between Raleigh and Monroe Counties before shrinking gradually southwestward along I-85 until finally disappearing completely into Monroe County just past exit 137B/I-485 southbound near Fayetteville while Green Springs persists slightly farther southeastward still straddling both I-85 corridors ultimately becoming part of Charlotte proper
