When Weddington, North Carolina was first settled in the early 1800s, it was a sparsely populated area. The only way to get to other settlements in the region was by boat. This prevented many people from getting exposure to what would eventually become America. To make up for this lack of access, the town started building its own water system in 1828. The city also built its first school in 1829 and its first grocery store in 1830. The town's population grew rapidly during the late 1800s and early 1900s due to three factors: the discovery of oil near Weddington, the growth of production agriculture throughout central North Carolina, and increased trade with surrounding states. In 1906, Weddington became one of two cities (the other being Greensboro) that seceded from North Carolina and formed the State of South Carolina. The following year, they established their own currency - the Weddington dollar - which lasted until 1959 when it merged into the state's currency. During World War II, Weddington played a significant role as an airfield for Allied forces before becoming a center for cotton farming after 1945. The economy has since shifted back to tourism as primary means of income; however, there is still some agricultural activity taking place on site.

Weddington was founded by white pioneers in 1851 as part of what would become known as the Granville Alleghany Grant territory. It was named for General James McDowell Weddleton, who had been colonel of artillery in the American Revolution and then served as a U.S. Senator from Virginia from 1797 to 1800 before becoming a general in the War of 1812. In 1881, Weddington became an incorporated town and remains so today with its own government and school system separate from the larger city of Raleigh. The stately home called "Olde World" dominates Weddington's center square and has been occupied by various businesses since its original construction in1874-75 by General David Ritchie and his wife Martha Noland Ritchie II, who were laterqueen dowagers of North Carolina and mother figures to many politicians over ensuing decades including future President Jimmy Carter and his first wife Rosalynn Carter (Dowager First Lady). Weddington has a post office with ZIP code 27510. Weddington was settled by English colonists in 1736 as Newbiggin Station on Yadkin River. The name "Weddington" was derived from the word "wedde", meaning "bridge." In 1812, Weddington became the seat of Forsyth County and incorporated as a village under that name. On July 10, 1907, Weddinton adopted a new government form unique to the United States called an unicameral legislative body or township board which operated until 1973 when it reverted back to its original form as an unincorporated community within Forsyth County. The first settler in what would become Weddington was James Goodloe who arrived in 1692 and built his home on what is now Main Street. He died unmarried and left behind two children: John Goodloe and Jane Goodloe Fontaine Waller who both established themselves in business ventures around their homes – one selling eggs while another manufactured bricks for local churches. John Goodloe's descendants began farming land northeast of their home on Pritchard's Creek where they erected stock pens on a bluff overlooking the creek valley below for their animals during winter months; however due to low water levels during wet years they discontinued operations until 1827 when they replaced these pens with modern buildings that still stand today – one being used as a library branch (now known as White Oak Branch Library). Webb & Haney’s grocery store opened its doors in 1927 providing groceries for local families including farmers markets outside of town every Thursday morning from early June through late October; Saturdays were also dedicated to this purpose with produce section open during all daylight hours beginning at 8 A.M.. After World War II there were several changes taking place within our community including although many people remain buried here there are also some structures that have changed hands over time such as “The Wagon Wheel” which served as our schoolhouse before being bought by Pritchard Elementary School and moved into storage then demolished but currently standing vacant next to I-240 just north of town limits after serving many years without proper care/maintenance… facilities included post office (1913), fire department (1929), blacksmith shop (1930-present), three churches affiliation: First Baptist Church (1897), Methodist Episcopal Church (1900) & Seventh Day Adventist Church Social Hall(1969). Today you will find most businesses closed but there is still plenty of evidence left behind including examples like “The Wagon Wheel” which served as our schoolhouse before being bought by Pritchard Elementary School and moved into storage then demolished but currently standing vacant next to I-240 just north of town limits after serving many years without proper care/maintenance along with more recent examples such as Weddding Nursery Supply Chain Store which opened its doors way back in 1908!
