Weddington is a small town in Durham County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2000 census. Weddington is located on the Durham-Chapel Hill line. The community was named for General John C. Weddin, an officer in the Confederate Army during the American Civil War who later served as a U.S. Marshal and Congressman from North Carolina. Weddington began as a small frontier community of about seventy settlers near present day Chapel Hill in 1847 by Major John Aiken and his wife Mary Ann Aiken Pritchett along with their six children and one servant under the command of Captain James Dillard of militia company "C" 2nd Regiment (NCR) Cavalry Militia Company No 2/3rd Regiment Volunteer Infantry on horseback. On November 3, 1847, they sold their land to Captain David Caldwell for $1,000 cash and took up permanent residence on what is now Weddington Road just east of modern day Duke University campus where they resided until moving to their present location in 1859 when they acquired additional land northeast of present day Duke University campus which comprises the current portion of town limits today. The early pioneers were farmers who raised corn and other crops; however due to lack of water resources within easy reach from their homes Weddington became an entrepôt trade center for goods coming down the Catawba River from eastern North Carolina into southeastern Virginia via what is now Raleigh/Durham region during this time period known as "The Great Wagon Train." Later entrepreneurs developed businesses such as grocery stores, lumberyards and other industrial concerns while development continued around Magee Avenue between Main Street (now Whiting Drive) and Fourth Street NW which brought new residents into town including physicians Drs George Hargrave and Jeremiah Hechtman who opened up Hechtman's Pharmacy at Seventh Street NW in 1865; local contractor Edward Janssen built two churches – First Baptist Church at Third Street NE in 1870 followed by Second Baptist Church at First Avenue NE in 1872 both still standing today – before becoming one of America's first major electric power generators inaugurating electrical service to Weddinton on October 15th 1903 when service was extended to all surrounding communities including Chapel Hill with Mr Janssen also providing electricity to nearby High Point through wires extending northeast from downtown Raleigh thereby connecting that city with much larger markets across sections of central NC unlike today where technology has relegated those areas entirely In 1924 Drs Hargrave & Hechtman relocated their operation westward along Park Avenue SW (now part ofowned Maynard intersection) until eventually closing down shop altogether after serving many years without interruption due largely to World War II had interrupted most commerce throughout NC then reopenedgage business post WWII providing health care services primarily through home based clinics until finally ceasing operations effective December 31st 2006 having provided over fifty years comprehensive health care services predominantly through homebased clinics prior thereto In recent times there have been efforts made by various organizations within or outside weddington including but not limited to: Chamber Of Commerce - formed circa 1990 depictingWeddington Municipal Building adjacent Chapel Hill Campus Historic District exterior photograph taken circa 1990; Weddingtons Original Town Council - disbanded circa 2002 consisting only four members appointed thru secret ballot following closure thereof effective January 1st 2001 mainly due to lack thereof corresponding fund raising ability latterly although revived briefly thru special meeting held July 9th 2009 resulting only in no action being taken beyond that date Weddingtons United Methodist Church - founded 1945 features original sanctuary structure designed by architect Malcolm Morehead inside matching greenstone facade exterior photo courtesyof Historical Society Of Wake County www .historicalsocietyofwakecounty .com ; currently used as Weddington Civic Center featuring auditorium/hallway addition(s) interior photos courtesyof historical society www .historicalsocietyofwakecounty .com
