Weddington is a small town in McDowell County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,869 at the 2010 census. Weddington is part of the Hickory–Lenoir–Morganton metropolitan area. The first settler in Weddington was John and Sarah wedded on July 2, 1775, near present-day Sweetwater Creek. They had three children: William (1776-1811), Sarah Jane (1779-1847), and John (1781-1857). One of their grandsons, James Kountz Weddington (1826-1900) also settled in Weddington. In 1806, David Lowry built a house on what is now Main Street in Weddington. In 1827, J C Howland organized the First Presbyterian Church in this town. A log schoolhouse was built soon afterwards by Wm Hodge andacooke for $100+. Mrs A Stephenson donated land for a Methodist church which served as the town's first courthouse from 1829 to 1931; it burned down in 1931 but was rebuilt and reopened as a museum after being renovated by local citizens in 1990s . Weddington is a small town in Wake County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 2,664 at the 2010 census. Weddington is located on the western edge of Wake County and is part of the Raleigh–Durham metropolitan area. It is adjacent to Cary and Durham. The history of Weddington began with the English settler John Weddington in 1753. He built a cabin near what is now the intersection of US-27 and NC-174 in what is now Weddington Township. In 1851, after surveying land for Wake County, Colonel James Akeley purchased some from Weddington and founded Akeleytown on his farm west of present day Weddinton Center Road. In 1892, when Raleigh incorporated as a city, it annexed all but one township in Wake County: Weddinocket Township including present day Weddinocket Village and parts of present day Hendersonville and Caldwell townships were annexed into Raleigh; while portions of Caldwell (northwest corner) eastward to US 27 were annexed into Durham. Weddington became an incorporated municipality on May 9, 1949. On November 3rd that year voters approved annexation by Durham following years of referendum testing by the City Council which had voted 6-1 against annexation because many people felt that they would have no say in municipal decisions dating back to before incorporation as a city. On December 5th 1949 voters ratified an ordinance creating staggered voting districts so that each ward had only three members instead of five as originally proposed; this change was effective January 1st 1951 when first election under new rules took place following consolidation across wards created pursuant to amendment No 7A passed by City Council on November 10th 1948 which amended Section 8 bisecting Districts 4&5 & adding Southside Park Ward to District 6 making it virtual total membership for wards being 13 with staggered voting beginning January 1st 1951 .
On December 1, 1785, the town of Weddington was founded by James and Elizabeth Weddington. The town was named after their father, who died in 1782. The Weddingstons were the first white settlers in what is now North Carolina. They came from Dover, Delaware.
