The first settler in what is now Weddington was John Tomlinson, who arrived in 1792. Tomlinson built a log cabin on the present site of Weddington Elementary School in 1814. A post office called Weddington was established in 1823, and remained in operation until 1959. Weddington had its start as a farming village located near the confluence of the French Broad and Neuse rivers. In 1891, local farmers erected a gristmill on the banks of the French Broad River to provide flour for local businesses and consumers across Stanly County. That mill continued to operate until 1984 when it was replaced by a new facility that became known as The Mill at Weddington. In 1907, local women organized an agricultural fair which drew attention from all over eastern North Carolina. The fair lasted five days and attracted more than 4,000 visitors from all over central and southern North Carolina. That same year, there were also celebrations marking the 200th anniversary of English settlement in North Carolina - an event that included speeches by Governor Tryon and other dignitaries at what is now Western NC State University campus (now UNC Asheville). During World War II,Weddington played an important role as one of numerous military airfields used by Allied Forces during World War II – including RAF Coltishall and RAF Lakenheath – providing vital combat capabilities for Allied forces throughout much of EuropeOperation Overlord; however some aspects of this history remain largely unknown or undocumented due to lack of research or documentation available to historians today!
