Weddington started as a Presbyterian settlement in 1837, but by 1850 it had become an Evangelical Lutheran community. It later merged with nearby Greenville to form Weddington-Greenville (later Greenville-Weddington) in 1907. The first settler in what would become Weddington was George Washington Thomson who purchased land from John Murray for $200 on December 10, 1837. Thomson built a log cabin that served as his home until 1840 when he moved to what is now downtown Weddington and started trading goods and services along hiwassee riverside. A post office was established atWeddinton on February 15, 1840, under the name "Henderson". Henderson remained operational until May 4, 1845 when it changed its name to "Weddington". The first store opened at 7:00 am on July 22nd, 1845 by Conrad Weiser and became one of weddingtons most popular tourist attractions for its wide variety of groceries and hardware items available for purchase from local farmers or their families during market days throughout fall and winter months.. In 1865 David Waddell bought some property east of present day Main Street from Solomon Hanesberger which formed today’s west side of town In 1870 Jno Fenton acquired alluvial rights (and title) over what would become Weddington Creek from David Waddell which made him the owner of all water resources within a radius up to 3 miles including both river channels On October 2nd 1870 James Pritchard purchased Lots A & B north of present day Main Street from Jno Fenton forming today’s east side just past current day courthouse Square It wasn't until 1880 that any permanent homes were constructed within weddington limits On January 12th 1880Lutheran Seminary opened its doors for instruction with Reverend Drury officiating . Reverend Drury soon became known throughout central NC as “the Father” due to his influence over many students who attended his seminary . After serving as pastor at First Christian Reformed Church – now Orangeburg Methodist Episcopal Church – Drury sold his share interest in Seminary in 1886 and continued teaching there full time until his death on November 5th 1919 . He was interred beside Rev Elisha Graham at Cemetery #2 northeast corner Main St & Second Ave .. In 1902 Reverend Harry Laughlin arrived early morning Tuesday morning after sleeping outside overnight adjacent to church lot next door seeking shelter from severe weather conditions found about 8am Wednesday morning near creek banks ready for cultivation acres we are told were worth an estimated $4000 .. Rev Laughlin organized members of Presbyterian church meetinghouse Committee To Purchase Lot adjoining Grounds For Chapel And School erected Stone Wall About 20 Feet High fence surrounds Chapel Today Home Of James Pritchard Sr., His Wife Anna Mae Pritchard & Their Two Sons Vance Jr.(1914 - 2016), Sharecropper Vance Pruitt (1917 - ), Harold Waddell(1920 - )& Cecil Beasley(1924 - ). New pastor Mrs Ruth Parks took charge September 1st 1928 following resignation/departure of Elder Eldon Johnston . Services held Sept 1st 1928 @ 11am followed by burial inside chapel walls..
