Weddington is a small town in Alamance County, North Carolina, located on the Outer Banks. The population was 1,693 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Research Triangle Park metropolitan area. The Weddington Post Office opened in 1892 and closed in 1995. Gun protection history in Weddington began with the establishment of a shoot club by local farmers in 1892. In 1911, Averill Prentice organized a rifle range to provide shooting opportunities for residents of Weddington and nearby towns including Wilmington and Hatteras Island. The range continued operation until it was forced to close by Prohibition laws in 1933 due to lack of funding. On October 5th 1893, George Wilesopened his wedgwood factory adjacent to present day Weddingtonshire High School after years of planning and investment totaling over $2 million dollars ($ when measured against todays value).
