The weddings of two leading citizens, James and Hannah Broughton, were held there in 1840. In 1846, John Weddington donated land to build what would become the town's first courthouse and jail. A second courthouse was built in 1857; it burned down in 1886. The present courthouse building was constructed between 1907 and 1909. In 1830, Captain Weddington's son-in-law Daniel Webster purchased the town from Captains James Pendergast and John Robertson for $1,500. In 1865, General Nathan Bedford Forrest marched on Weddington to seize its cotton crop as part of his Confederate forces during the American Civil War. General Forrest's forces burned most of the town before withdrawing late that night. The history of Weddinton begins with Captain John Weddington who settled there in 1820 after leaving England for America on a missionary journey to evangelize slaves freed by Ulysses S Grant’s Creek Campaign in 1823/24 as part of President James Ketchum’s effort to break free from British control following the Battle of Cowpens against combined British and American forces under Andrew Jackson (1829). Captain John wedged himself into a swampy piece of land just north of present dayWeddington so he could get good water access whilestill having some control over what went on around him; it would later be known as “the wedgie” area because many homes were built close together along one muddy edge within easy sight or view if you had a clear path to get to them from anywhere else in the township! This strategic location allowed him much power over how his community developed both politically and militarily which gave rise to this name – weddingtons being derived either directly or indirectly from “Captain John” or some other reference point used by him for governance and political stability within his Trading Post colony! For many years there was no school located within walking distance of any house which made learning about our local history challenging but not impossible; however recent work has begun making significant improvements including restoring original doors, window frames & glass (some still have old caulking left behind!)
