Weddington is a small town in Heard County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,059 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Charlotte–Fort Mill metropolitan area. Weddington is one of two towns that make up the unincorporated community of Weddingale. Weddingale was platted in 1868 by induced donation from David Ladd and John Pritchard. The name "Weddington" was given to it by General Johnston on his way through the town on July 5, 1868 while he was inspecting troop movements in eastern North Carolina. Weddington post office operated from 1872 to 1865 under the name "Ladd's Ferry." It changed its name to "Weddingale" in 1870 and remained so until 1902 when it became part of Heard County under statehood. The first settler in what would become Weddingale was Abram Wheeler who arrived in 1838. He built a log cabin on an agricultural grant near present-day Springdale Road and named it Wheeler's Cabin after himself and his father Abram Wheelock who had also settled there earlier that year. By 1840, Wheeler had four children and seven grandchildren living in this small village located along the then known Amherst Creek valley between what are now Springdale Road and Gorman Drive today’s Weddingale Cemetery east of Old Fort Hill Rd./SR 611 just inside modern day Greenville; north of current day Tuebington Rd./SR 620 south of Hwy 99W wedddingaleschool website wedddingaleschool

In 1814, Captain James Fenton erected a store on Main Street and began to trade with surrounding counties. A few years later, he built a schoolhouse on what is now Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. Fenton also became active in local politics and served as an delegate to the North Carolina state convention in 1828 and 1830. In 1865, General Robert Ewell captured Charlotte during the Battle of Charlotte (1864). After Confederate forces abandoned Charlotte, Weddington surrendered without battle; its incorporation into Durham County did not take place until 1870. By 1860, Weddington had reached its population of 150 people and had developed a small newspaper business that published three times per week. In 1892, Captain John Waddell erected a log courthouse on State Road 1 near today's Moncrief Elementary School; it still stands today and is used as a museum open to the public . On July 14th of that year,Captain Waddell married Lillie Tilton at Log Cabin Church located four miles east of wedlington on SR 2A just south of present day White Sands Drive/SR 682 adjacent to US HWY 70/SR 601)
