It is located on the eastern edge of Swain County and its capital is Weddington. Weddington was founded by John Weddin in 1810 as a stop on the Transylvania Road between Durham and Raleigh. In 1828, it absorbed nearby Southerly Plantation and changed its name to Weddington again because of its location on the Yadkin River watershed that includes parts of both North Carolina and South Carolina. The first store inWeddington was built in 1829 by J R Henderson. The first school opened in 1830. In 1840, wedddington incorporated as a city under the name "Weddington". On April Fool's Day 1845, due to concerns about possible Indian attacks, Mayor James Hargrave ordered all fires be put out in Weddington so no one would be fooled into thinking they were part of an attack that day when actually there were no attacks reported that day! The city lost this distinction when Raleigh annexed it without providing any financial compensation to wedddington residents with only 3 cents per capita given to Raleigh for each resident! In 1865, following Confederate surrender at Appomattox Court House (April 9th), most of what remained of North Carolina seceded from the Union and reverted back to Confederate rule under General Beauregard as part of the Confederacy’s attempt to re-establish control over much of southern America including what remains today known as “the Carolinas” which included much of central NC including Weddingtone

Weddington is a town in Carteret County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,644 at the 2010 census. Weddington is part of the Asheville metropolitan area. It is located on the Western edge of Carteret County and is bordered by the city of Asheville to the north, Checkered Ridge to the east, and Buncombe County to the south. The first settler in what is now Weddington was John Weddington who arrived in 1776. He named his land "Weddington" after his home town in England where he had been born two years earlier. The first post office was established in 1824. In 1838, a sawmill was built on what are now Main Street and Maple Avenue; this mill continued operation until 1902 when it burned down. A store was also established about this time along with a school for children which operated until 1906 when it closed because of lack of funds. In 1855, Jno Gentry founded an agricultural college called Goucher College which became known as UNC-Chapel Hill in 1926 when UNC Chapel Hill bought Goucher's assets from Jno Gentry's widow Emmaline Beardsley Gentry (1824-1910). In 1860s and 1870s Weddington had several stores that sold goods from local farmers such as flour, butter, eggs and pork products as well as supplies for plantations near Wilmington NC including Johnston Plantation west of town and Carrboro Plantation east of town owned by Colonel Daniel Johnston (1775-1849) later US Senator from North Carolina Wm Harnett (1800-1868) who served as Governor of North Carolina from 1861-1865 and others . . . By 1880 there were 11 businesses operating within Weddington limits: six stores (Fayetteville Post Office & Grocery Store; C&O Railroad station wagon barn; Sowers Millinery; Mrs Sayers' grocery store; Ransom Hardware store), one restaurant (Mrs Fenton’s house), four church services (First Baptist Church; Second Baptist Church; Methodist Episcopal Church - Southside Meeting House & First Presbyterian Church -Northside Meeting House), two schools (Weddingtons School & Goucher Agricultural College), three churches viz First Baptist Church - South Side Meeting House ; Second Baptist Church - North Side Meeting House ; Methodist Episcopal Churches -Southside Meeting House Agrarian college closed but reopening under new name Monmouth University 1980 with satellite campuses located in Raleigh(UNC Chapel Hill)and Kings Mountain(Weddington). After World War II Monmouth University moved its main campus to Greensboro NCLB before returning back to Monmouth University Campus at Wynnewood south side shopping center 1989 becomingNC State University at Asheville 1991 with satellite campuses locatedin Garner(New Bern/Conway); Mount Laurel(Asheville/Milton); Lenoir City(Lincoln county)/Tellico Plains(Clay county)); Catawba Hills Village(Wilson county); Rocky Mount Village( Burke county)). After statehood all university systems merged into one system called State University at Charlotte 1992 which renamed itself StateUniversity at Charlotte 1993-.
