The main commercial artery through town is Main Street which runs east-west and has several churches, banks, businesses and residences along its length. The Weddington Volunteer Fire Department provides fire services for the community; it also operates two ambulance sirens that provide 24/7 coverage for all residents within the community should an emergency arise. In recent years Weddington has become well known as an agricultural center due to its production of corn, beans, soybeans and other vegetables; however some manufacturing continues such as fabricated metal products from aluminum cans produced hereabouts

Weddington was a small town in Randolph County, North Carolina, United States until the early 1800s. It is located on the Yadkin River and was first settled by English colonists in 1718. The town was originally named Fayetteville after George Washington's home state of Virginia. Weddington served as a stop on the Underground Railroad during the American Revolution. In 1836, Weddington renamed itself for James Weddington, an important local philanthropist and military figure who had contributed greatly to its development. In 1861, during the American Civil War, Weddington sided with Confederate forces and lost its status as a town. By 1865, however, Weddington had regained its former prosperity thanks to growth in nearby Greeneville and other neighboring towns. In 1870, Weddinton moved from its original site on the riverbank to what is now downtown. With increased commercialactivity and suburban development around it over the years, weddington has seen various incarnations including a number of small businesses (now called "cities"), several high-rise buildings (now called "residential towers"), and two large shopping malls—one now known as The Square One Center Mall and one once known as The mall at Riverside Park—both of which are anchored by Sears Roebuck & Co., JCPenney Inc., Macy's Inc., Best Buy Co., Sprint Corp., Dollar General Corp., Wells Fargo & Company and Kmart Corporation. Weddington is currently considered one of the most vibrant small towns in rural America due to its rich history and ample opportunity for cultural exploration within walking distance of everything that makes weddington special: Museum DistrictWalk; restaurants such as Old Hickory BBQ; arts&crafts galleries; several churches; green space including many trees); parks including Wellesley Park/Beach Park/Lake Norman Park/Meadow View Park/Fayetteville Lakefront Parkway; public transportation including bus service to both Greeneville SC(a suburb)and Beechboro PA(nearby), walking or biking through many neighborhoods with plenty of places to eat (including several pizza joints) or buy groceries (the only store still open inside wedddington limits being deed restrictions on how much external redevelopment may occur).
Weddington was founded by farmers in 1792. It became a town in 1811 and then a city in 1865.
