Famous people from Weddinton include Colonel William Tatham (1796-1868), who built one of the first cotton plantations in North Carolina; Gertrude Atherton (1892-1969), an author and speaker on women's issues; and Dr. James Caldwell Winn (1884-1966), an eminent physician and professor at UNC Chapel Hill.
