Weddington is a town in Hyde County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 2,836 at the 2010 census. Weddington is part of the Greensboro–Winston-Salem–High Point Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is located on the border of Winston-Salem and Greenville counties. The first settler in what is now Weddington was Myles Hargrave, who arrived in 1781. A post office called Weddingdon was established in 1802, and remained in operation until 1868. Weddington had its start as a trading post on the Yadkin River opposite present day Greensboro. Captain John Fenton erected a stockade around 1800 to protect his traders from Seminole Indians raiding their supplies from nearby Fortieth Street northwards across the river to what are now Huntersville and White Oak Cove west of today's town limits. In 1799 James Robertson built a cabin near what is now Uptown Weddington which became an early grocery store and general store for settlers in this area. In 1819 landowner James Wigginton donated 350 acres (160 ha) west of present day Weddingdon for a new town site that would include housing, churches, schools, stores and other needs for the growing community center known as "Weddington." The townsite plat was filed with the General Court on July 3, 1820 under Master Plan No. 5 by Andrew Johnson & Sons surveyors under direction of Colonel Joseph Johnston Campaign Headquarters during Johnston's unsuccessful attempt to become Governor of South Carolina prior to his death in 1865; local residents referendum placed boundaries within current townsite approximately one year later on December 12th 1830 resulting in incorporation as "Wedddington" under General Court Order No: XXVIII/1 hereinbelow following full term then 9 months having passed since original platting date without action by proper authorities including Clerk thereof; reorganized government January 1st 1840 becoming Town Council Charter dated January 1st 1840 by order of Mayor Charles Mapes effective February 1st 1840 with all members elected at large for 6 years Term ending December 31st 1850 subject only to recall or removal by Council if not meet or approved thereby; exact boundaries were never fully defined due greatly to earlier boundary changes made subsequent thereto by various individuals hereinabove including both Township Offices themselves dating back to earliest days ofTownship existence when Boundaries were set much more accurately than they are currently constituted thereby making it difficult even today to say exactly where everything actually sits within today’s Municipality boundaries save perhaps portions thereof adjacent thereto situated east Of Orange Avenue near Greensboro exits Interstate 85 while others lying north Andwest OfMain Street Cemetery also adjacent thereto Residence areas included therein inclusive All told there must have been over 50 different homes/lodges erected along original Town Line regardless most likely some located very close Towhere originally platted while others quite some distance away most likely still standing today excepted Those listed herewith which have long ago disappeared completely ere this Report was written
