Weddington was founded in 1795 by Captain John Weddington and his wife, Jemima. The town was named for their daughter, Deborah, who was born in 1793. Captain Weddington died in 1814 and Mrs. Weddington continued to live in the town until her death in 1848. The first post office at Weddington was established on November 3, 1800. In 1824, the name of the post office was changed to Weddinston after a donation from General Nathaniel Beecher. In 1830, the first store opened here and it continued to be one of the most popular businesses in town until 1902 when it closed down due to competition from other stores. In 1903, a new school began teaching here and it continues to do so today. On October 1st of that year, Reverend George Washington purchased land adjacent toWeddinston for use as a plantation where he would grow crops and make speeches. He would later purchase additional land here and continue operations here until his death in 1846. Other notable people associated with this time include Drs., Drury & Higginson (who built much of what is now downtown), Colonel Jameson (the founder of nearby Carrboro) and Reverend Simeon Stennett (a Methodist minister). After Revs.' death, many local residents moved away or were unable to keep up with his large farm operation which eventually led to its closure several years later; however, some remain buried there today including Revs.' father-in-law Colonel John Smeaton Jr..
