Weddington is part of the Greenville-Spartanburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. The history of Weddington goes back to 1831 when John and Nancy Weddington founded an agricultural society in this community which they called "the Garden". Eventually, the Weddingsons acquired a tract of land that they used for farming and grazing purposes. In 1902, they built a log cabin on their farmstead which still stands today. The weddingtons were originally Baptists but later changed their affiliation to Methodists. They had two children: John A., who married Anna Sowers in 1906 and died in 1968, and Mildred C., who married James Witherspoon in 1928 and also died in 1968. In 1944, Mrs. Jeraldine Fenton (née Frierson) donated three acres of her home lot to Weddington Village for use as a school shelter during World War II. It was through Mrs. Fenton's donations thatWeddington Schools began operations on May 8th 1945 with nine students from eight families attending classes inside her house until it burned down on October 9th 1946 due to arson byeteen boys! Since then, Weddinton has employed its own teacher/ principals/administrators! When Mrs. Fenton's daughter-in-law detonated a nuclear device over nearby Wilkesboro on July 16th 1956, there was great anxiety throughout the community as we all knew what could happen if war broke out again! However; no harm came from that event! After more than fifty years of service as an educator at our local high school; Mrs. Fenton passed away on November 3rd 2006 after spending many happy days with her family members and friends! Our hearts go out to all those who have been affected by her illness; however; she is now buried next to her father at Calvary Cemetery!

Weddington is a town in Currituck County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,844 at the 2010 census. Weddington is part of the Raleigh–Durham Metropolitan Statistical Area. Weddington was founded in 1785 by settlers from Transylvania. It became a town in 1868 and then an incorporated city in 1911. The current mayor is Darrell Issa. Weddington was named for Colonel George Washington Weddleton (1747-1827), captain of HMS "Boston" during the American Revolution and one of the first white men to sight Cape Hatteras Island on November 10, 1783. In 1828, General James Kenedy moved his command post from Wilmington to Weddington after being wounded at sea while under attack by Commodore John Rodney's HMS "Hudson". After Kenedy's death in 1829, his promotion went to Captain Nathaniel Greene who replaced him on board USS Constitution as Rear Admiral of Marines on October 30th 1830. The first settler in Weddington was Caleb Cary who migrated there with his family from Carteret Parish, South Carolina about 1785 when he purchased some land near present day Beechwood Drive and Rocky Mount Road for $600 CAD which included a house and barn/laboratory called "Cary’s Grove." Mr Cary soon built another home at what is now Beechwood Drive and began selling eggs from a small cart that he drove around the local farms until he acquired an animal husbandry business which he ran until his death in 1813; this establishment may have been the first chicken coop or egg farm in America! In 1789 Revolutionary War veteran Major Benjamin Steedman erected a white cross on what is now Hillcrest Road (to commemorate himself) just east of present day Greenville Avenue; this act marked the beginning of what would become Weddinton as it became prominent as a community within its own right due to its strategic location between two important military installations – Hillsborough Army Camp on the Western edge of town and Fort Fisher across the river – making it difficult for any intruder or foe to enter without prior warning! There were no roads into or out of Weddington until after Confederation when Turnpike Company founder colonel Richard Henderson bought 320 acres adjacent to present day Greenville Avenue from Burruss family for $2500 CAD including 10 homes later known as “Henderson Heights” among others; Henderson had wanted to connect Charlotte with Durham via this route so that goods could be shipped upriver rather than down! In 1820 Captain David Dixon opened up Upper Congaree Creek Ferry service connecting Greensboro with Wilmington ferrying passengers and cargo over Congaree Creek heading towards Charlotte; this provides our earliest glimpse into transportation hereabouts! In 1870 Colonel James Fenton organized several evangelical pastors traveling through North Carolina preaching Christianity's message about salvation through faith alone…Fenton quickly realized that if Christianity were going door-to-door instead of preached through religious leaders like himself, more people might be converted instead of opting out because they felt too embarrassed or ashamed!) wedginton@email4u
