James Easley also purchased land here in 1825 and established a mill which served the community until it burned down in 1865. A post office called Weddington was established in 1827, and remained active until it closed in 1907. Weddington is a town in Wilkes County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,890 at the 2010 census. Weddington is the county seat of Wilkes County. It is part of the Greensboro–Winston-Salem Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Weddington was John White who arrived in 1792 from Virginia. Some early settlers were Gideon Hines and his family, Ichabod French, Amos Fenton and his brother Ebenezer Fenton, Solomon Townsend, Levi Coffin and his brother Samuel Coffin, Elijah Hicks, Absalom Burruss and his father Absalom Burruss (the founder of Carrboro), Moses Greenlaw and his father Asa Greenlaw (of Alamance County), Isaac Goodloe and his father Isaac Goodloe (of Granville County). The first school in Weddington was built on the site of what is now the High School. The first teacher was Mrs. Elisha Broughton who taught for one semester in 1804 before moving to Salisbury to teach again. In 1811 Drury opened a Female Seminary which later became UNC Asheville University. In 1816 Rev. James Bowles moved to Weddington from nearby Salisbury with some students from US Military Academy at West Point to establish a Presbyterian church there that would eventually become known as First Baptist Church of Weddington & Salisbury (#1 NC A&T Church). Reverend Bowles donated land for the church on which it stands today on Elm Street near Presentation Road NW in WeddINGTON! The town drunk Wm Stephenson founded an academy here too but this school closed around 1830 because he couldn't get enough pupils! In 1824 Revs Wm Stephenson & John Newcomb organized a group of young religious men called "Masons" or "Craftsmen" to help promote Christianity among those living around them hereabouts especially among farmers since they were often not able to go preach or learn about Jesus Christ due to lack of financial resources at that time! That same year Friar Sebastian Clements arrived from Wilmington with some students from Raleigh's St Augustine's Collegetowne (& Chapel Hill) where he had been teaching since 1795!!! Father Clements gave us our very first Bible!! He also started helping out with farming back then so we pretty much knew everything about farming back then LOL We have pictures dating back to about 1800 showingFather Clements' farm just outside present day Weddinion! So yes Friar Sebastian did play a big role in helping form our town into what it is today 🙂 A post office calledWeddinion was established on December 3rd1826 by Captn Edward McIntyre with mail served until 1888 when it was renamed Morristown #2 because MORRISTSVILLE LANDED IN THAT DISTRICT BACK THEN!!!!! weddinion finally got its own ZIP CODE IN 1973!!!!!! 😃😃😃
