Weddington is located on the east side of the Swain County line, about 15 miles south of Hendersonville. The northwest corner of Weddington is within Hendersonville limits. Weddington was founded in 1835 by settlers who came from Scotland and Ireland. In 1851, it became a post office under the name Ofieldsborough. In 1881, it became a village and was renamed Weddington after its founder, James Denton Weddinckworth. He had come to NC from Scotland in 1840 and married Jane McCormick in 1848. Their children were John Fenton Weddinckworth (1851-1922), JF Weddinckworth (1854-1925), Alice Atha McNaught McDowell (1857-1939), Rachel Lavinia Armstrong (1859-1945), James Denton Jr., and Edwin George Armstrong (1863-1937). The first school inWeddinton was built in 1835 by settler John Winterson as an academy for his boys. It later served as a grange hall until it was destroyed by fire in 1861. The second school building was erected oncn 1870 by Alexander McKay with help from local farmers and citizensstromidng Reverend P E Kingman Coady O S Bishopsgate School which still stands today serving students from grades pre K to 12th grade After years of planning and construction efforts spearheaded by Mrs M H Weavercombe during her tenure as Superintendent of Schools for Swain County we are excited to open our doors to our new elementary school this fall! It wasn’t until later on that this type of projectile became popularized within warfare – primarily due to its effectiveness against fighter jets!
