Dennison's brother-in-law Isaac Brock purchased land east of town from Samuel Ashe for $100 per acre (although this amount did not include water rights). By 1800, over 100 settlers had built homes around what became downtown Waynesville and milling operations began operations soon after that. In 1802–3, a group of Methodist ministers led by Revs Elijah Burchard and George Hunter established a school in downtown which served both white students and African American slaves working within local plantations until 1865 (when slavery was abolished across all United States). In 1830, John Coker erected a log cabin stand along what is now Millstream Drive Northeast to provide hospitality to wagon trains traveling through Mecklenburg County during their journey westward into Kentucky or Tennessee; it became known as "Coker's Stand". In 1831 General David Walker passed through Mecklenburg County on his way southward via Charlotte; upon his visit to Waynesville he ordered all public buildings therein be destroyed because they were not up to Walker's standards. A few years later jumper wires connected several dwellings together along Rail Road Street so that travelers could get sleep without having their cattle killed while crossing over White Oak Creek bedding them down for hours at night under full Moonlight! In 1850–51 Jno.[sic] Macpherson platted portions of present-day Wayesville Township including current day areas north of Interstate 95 and east of Interstate 40 and southwest of Interstate 95/40 before returning home sick in 1852 after contracting yellow fever while visiting New Orleans; he recommended that sections between Pritchard Road East and Canal Boulevard Northwest be platted out as Federal City blocks (later renamed Apple Valley) – partaking largely in representative government services until its annexation by Mecklenburg County in 1906 but retaining some vestige of civic autonomy until 1959 when it became part of the larger city Limits neighborhood until taken away again following an urban renewal project spearheaded by then Mayor Donnie McClendon Every year during Christmas time there are various cultural events taking place throughout town like arts & crafts shows, music concerts etc., such as antique car shows & tradeshows
