In 1861, during the American Civil War, Waynesville was one of several towns in Henderson County that sided with Confederate States of America (CSA). After the war ended, many residents moved to neighboring Polk County because there were no jobs available here for them in Henderson County. In 1960, Waynesville had a population of 684 people. The population increased to 8,895 in 2000 and reached its current level of prominence as a bedroom community for Raleigh-Durham Airport. There are now plans to make way for a new airport within the community limits; however, no decisions have yet been made about where it should be built or how much money will be needed to finance it. Waynesville is located at 36°26′N 73°47′W (36°27'N 73°48'W est), about 12 miles southeast of Raleigh and 13 miles northwest of Durham.
