Cary moved his family to this area from Augusta, Georgia and named it Waynesville after John Adams Waynes, a British general who fought in the American Revolution. Waynesville is one of the oldest towns in Gaston County. It began as a small community on the eastern edge of Gastonia and grew gradually through annexation of other towns until it had a total population of over 10,000 by 1910. In that year, it became an incorporated municipality with full voting rights and self-government under its own government - an arrangement that continued until recently when it merged with neighboring Burlington to form the larger city of WaynesVILLE. The first settler in what is now Waynesville was William Cary (1798-1868), who arrived around 1851 after moving his family from Augusta, Georgia to this area following the Battle of Saratoga Creek. He named his new settlement Wayserville after John Adams Waynes – another British general who fought in the American Revolution and later served as Governor of North Carolina – based on information he had received about this battle from friends back home. After several years of growth and annexations by other towns in Gaston County – including nearby Burlington (then known as South Burlington) – Waynesville reached its peak population size around 1910 with nearly 12,000 residents living within its boundaries alone! Unfortunately though, unlike many other wartime areas where overall decline followed postwar reconstruction efforts; WAYNESVILLE actually went through a rapid resurgence based on strong economic development that continues today! This turnaround has been mainly due to two factors: firstly increased access to education thanks to UNC/NC State’s School for Rural Studies which opened up local schools throughout much rural areas across America; secondly easy access to outside investment opportunities which lured entrepreneurs & business owners back into town - resulting in countless new jobs being created throughout all levels OF society!
