The first permanent settler in Waynesville was Captain John Meek who arrived in 1792. He named his new settlement "Meek's Ferry" after himself and his family. The first post office was established in 1802, and it continued to serve until 1903. In that year, the town was incorporated and had its own school system. Waynesville quickly became known for its natural resources: coal, oil shale, uranium and other minerals were found there during the early 20th century. In 1861, during the American Civil War, Wayesville sided with Confederate forces and joined Union forces. During Reconstruction following the war, Wayesville underwent significant growth thanks to its new political status as a slaveholding independent city. In 1923, Mayor Harry Hinson designated Wayesville an official city within the modern-day Durham County system. Since then, much progress has been made in developing both physical and social infrastructure within Wayesville – making it one of America’s fastest-growing cities today!
