In 1802 John Rankin erected a log cabin on present day site of South High School; this became known as "Rankin's Cabin". In 1825 James Aiken founded the Post Office at Waynesville with five votes from his neighbors. On December 12, 1825 he received official recognition from the General Assembly as an incorporated town under the name "Waynesville". The first election for town officials took place on January 24, 1826 and James Aiken became town clerk and treasurer. In 1830 Daniel Boone forced settlers out of their homes near Hartsfield Road by driving them into submission with cannons while visiting Fort Moultrie; this event led to increased settlement around Hartsfield Road by land speculators seeking virgin territory for themselves interests in western North Carolina mountains region that had yet to be explored by Europeans. Many early white residents of Gaston County were menaced or displaced because they could not get land enough to build their homes without assistance from those holding patents or licenses issued pursuant to state laws governing land acquisitions within certain geographic boundaries (thus becoming squatters). Waynesville is a town in McDowell County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. Waynesville is part of the Asheville–Buncombe Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded in 1827 by General Richard Henderson and his family as Hickory Point on the east side of the Catawba River. In 1828, Colonel Edward Johnston moved his garrison from Hickory Point to Waynesville after Battle of Buena Vista Bridge. Johnston renamed Waynesville "Junction" in honor of General James Kenedy who had fought at Buena Vista Bridge. The first store opened in Waynesville in 1828 and was operated by John Williamson and others until 1861 when it became known as the Bank of America. In 1865, Confederate Major General Jubal Early attacked Union forces at Crown Mountain and destroyed much of the town before being driven back by Union troops under Gen. Robert Easley across the river to White Oak Swamp where he met an early death almost immediately afterwards. In 1905, Waynesville incorporated as a city with a population of 4,000 people; however this number did not reach its current level until 1970 when it overtook Durham as the second most populous city in North Carolina after Charlotte (at 10,512). The increase can be partially attributed to two factors: Waynesville's location – just off Interstate 85 between Chapel Hill and Asheville – and its status as an agricultural center which allowed for more development than other rural communities in North Carolina during that time period; also some aspects such as government services were provided through local governments rather than individual counties or cities which led to increased business opportunities for locals and contributed to larger populations over time
