Waynesville is a town in Cabarrus County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 5,856 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Chapel Hill–Concord–Fayetteville, NC Metropolitan Statistical Area. Waynesville was founded in 1845 by Captain John Waynes and his wife Anna McCoy as a small village on the edge of what is now known as Morehead City. The name "Waynesville" derived from Captain John's brother-in-law Jonathan Waynes who settled there in 1781. The first store in Waynesville was established by Captian John Waynes on December 8, 1845. At that time the area consisted of only a few lots of land and no buildings other than their own homes. In 1850, Captain John's son Mr. Samuel Waynes opened up a grocery store at what is now Main Street and Fourth Avenue which later became known as the Citizen’s Bank & Trust Company building (now home to First Presbyterian Church). In 1865, Mr. James Dooley opened up his first general store at Third Avenue and Elm Street which later become known as Dooley’s Drug Store (now Home Depot). In 1907 Mr. Wm Smedley organized the first Methodist Episcopal Church in this town with Rev Dr H C Smedley officiating at its inauguration ceremonies. In 1924 Mrs Dorthy Kightly opened her first post office in town bearing her maiden name only for it to be discontinued after one year due to low mail volumes! A new post office was built on Second Court Square in 1927 by Mrs Dorthy Kightly herself becoming one of North Carolina's earliest female postal employees! A bridge over Nashua River was constructed across Nashua River between wayside stores east of US 301 (later I-95) just west of present day Highway 421 (now Boulevard) in 1928-1929; this also marked the beginning of southwestern Rd from Asheboro to Sewanee Ave where it intersected I-95/US 301 about 9 miles northwest then continued northeast about 7 miles until reaching its current terminus just east of present day Yadkin Valley High School near mile marker 227 on HW 421 today! This roadway still bears that name today although portions have been renamed simply “Boulevard” or “Highway 421” etc.. In 1965 US 301A was designated concurrent with I-95 just south of downtown Asheville before turning southeast towards Gastonburg serving eastern Polk County while I-395 served western Buncombe County concurrent with US 301 until both routes were redesignated as I-540 late last year when US 401 rejoind I-95 eastward thru much NCC
Waynesville was founded in 1795 by John and Susanna Waytes. The first post office was established in 1802. In 1865, the town became a county seat and remained so until 1907. During World War II, Waynesville was the center of a munitions production plant. In 1948, the town voted to become an independent city.
