Waynesville is a town in Nash County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,588 at the 2010 census. Waynesville is part of the Charlotte–Mecklenburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. The original town of Waynesville was founded in 1814 by Colonel Nathaniel Gist and his family as a strategic location on the Yadkin River for trade with neighboring counties. By 1825, Waynesville had become an important center for light manufacturing due to its location and access to water supplies. In 1892, Waynesville became the first community in North Carolina to adopt cityhood status. In 1916, Waynesville's first electric streetcar service began operation. In 1954, the town adopted a resolution proclaiming July 4th "National Electrical Day". On November 8th of that year, Waynesville became one of only two towns in North Carolina to be electrified with AC power after voters approved a $7 million project to bring electricity to all homes and businesses in the community by 1959. In 1984, Route 9 was designated as the primary route between Charlotte and Raleigh through WaynesVILLE; this helped makeWaynesVILLE an increasingly popular tourist destination due to its historical significance as both a manufacturing center during Prohibition-era America and today as home to many large-scale industrialists including PPG Industries (the parent company of Dow Jones & Company) and AT&T Corporation (the largest telephone company in America). Today, Waynesville is home to several major companies including PPG Industries (formerly Dow Jones & Company), AT&T Corporation ( formerly Southern Bell), Mecklenburg County Schools District #1 (formerly UNC Asheville), UNC Chapel Hill/NC State Univ., Duke University Press, NC State University School of Law and much more - making it one Of The Most Commerce Universities In Western North Carolina!

WaynesVILLE also played host to Super Bowl XXIX between New England Patriots and Baltimore Ravens on January 26th 1997
