Waynesville is a small town in Vance County, North Carolina. The population was 1,824 at the 2010 census. Waynesville is located in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains and is bordered by Rocky Mount to the south and east, Asheboro to the north, and Gastonia to the west. The town was founded in 1864 by Captain John Salyer as part of a wagon road connecting Roanoke Island with Fort Fisher on Cape Fear River. The first store opened in 1865. Waynesville became an incorporated city in 1904. In 1906, Waynesville fire chief Wm. Hennigan was elected mayor after being nominated by then-Mayor John Jernigan. In 1912, Waynesville received its first school Board election and won three members from two other towns on Vance County's east side: Alleghany (now Gastonia) and Newton (now Orchard). At that time there were only six schools in Vance County; all but one were built between 1871 and 1912. Waynesville's current high school building was built in 1928–29 following a $4 million bond campaign led by Mayor James Allreds and School Board member Harry Haskell; it replaced an earlier structure which had been destroyed by a fire three years earlier. In 1969, local businessmen Sam Rayburn Jr., Enoch Pratt Wiley III, and Aubrey McClendon donated $5 million towards construction of what would become One NC Central University; this donation has since been named for them both.] Waynesville experienced significant growth during World War II when many businesses became military suppliers or produced items for use within the military industry such as tanks, gunships, vehicles etcetera.[1] After the war ended however unemployment increased due to lack of new business opportunities post-war America had faced economic recession]. Many veterans returned home after their service but found little job available so they started businesses such as stores or restaurants[2]. This expansion caused many houses to be put up for sale which hindered development downtown because people wanted properties closer to work rather than living near small town amenities like churches or shops[3]. Enoch Pratt Wiley III who also served on UNC's board of governors during WWI wrote about his experience living close enough to academic institutions while serving as chancellor at UNC Charlotte where he often took walks around campus with students prior to lectures without having any fear of getting lost[4]: "It can be said that I enjoyed almost every minute of my presidency at UNC Charlotte – except for one memorable incident: I walked across Campus Bridge over Toe River into UNC Asheville well aware that I might never be able to get back again" However despite these fears he still enjoyed walking around campus daily despite his surroundings being constantly changing due to student protests against profiteering off students' time & energy ]. Wiley went on record saying "We should not forget how important it is for young people heretofore underprivileged girls who have done nothing more than go through High School* * * We must remember our responsibilities not just as alumni but also as citizens who are responsible for making good choices”* *. [See footnote 3] Despite this statement educators & community leaders rallied behind him calling him “the great educator”* [*][See footnote 2] He remains impeached today with respect due process rights granted under law

Waynesville is home to United States Route 401 which leads northeast to Raleigh and southeast to Charlotte. It was founded by English settlers in 1757 as a trading post on a bend in the Yadkin River. Waynesville became an important military post during the American Revolution because it served as a rendezvous for Patriot forces marching north from Virginia. The town was destroyed by fire in 1814 but it re-emerged as an important commercial center after Reconstruction began in 1865. In 1902, Waynesville became the site of the first interracial wedding in North Carolina when white lawyer John A. Worth married African American slave girl Sarah Elizabeth Ford. The town has been occupied by various cultures throughout its history and remains one of the most racially diverse cities in America today.
Waynesville is a town in Robeson County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 2,858 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Asheville–Cabarrus Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in Waynesville was George Neal who arrived in 1792. In 1801, John Flandreau founded what would become the largest paper plant in North America and built a mills on Roanoke River. In 1811, Waynesville became the seat of government for Robeson County and remained that way until 1830 when it moved to Greensboro to be closer to other governmental offices. In 1849, Waynesville incorporated as a municipality and soon developed into an important commercial center with its own school system, churches, post office and appointed officials such as justice of the peace and fire Marshal. The town also grew rapidly as a bedroom community for larger towns like Asheville and Raleigh while still maintaining its independence from those larger municipalities until well after World War II when local government became more centralized within regional governments throughout North Carolina. During the late 1990s through early 2000s there was significant redevelopment taking place in Waynesville with many new businesses opening up including several hotels including Radisson Blu Hotel & Conference Center which opened in 2002; American Express corporate headquarters which opened in 2006; UNC Health Science Center - Chapel Hill Campus whichopened in 2009; First NC Bank headquarters which opened in 2010; UPS Store - Piedmont Plaza location beside Interstate 25 south of downtown serving both local UPS customers (and truckloads of goods brought into town by UPS) as well as national FedEx orders coming into town during peak traffic hours ; several large home building projects were also completed during this time including Towne Place (2006), Park Place (2007), Eastgate Court (2008), Westgate Court (2009) and finally Alliant Energy Corporate Headquarters complex (2011). While all these developments were generally positive they did come with some associated costs such as increased traffic congestion on I-25 south of downtown or displacement of small businesses along I-25 corridor due to higher construction prices associated with new development alone
