In 1825, fur trader William Thornton became one of Waynesville's earliest residents when he established himself here as a trader with Andrew Jackson's Surveyor General Manuel Micheltorena. By 1830, Thornton had accumulated over 1 million acres (500 km²) across central and eastern North Carolina including much of what later became McDowell County. Thornton also built Fort McAllister on an overlook overlooking the Yadkin River where he entertained president James Kensey in 1850 and 1851 while living in nearby Charlotte. By 1835, however, Thornton had lost most of his land to squatters and decided to move away from North Carolina altogether; this left way for Moores' son-in-law James Fenton to take up residence in what would become downtown Waynesville as well as continue trading here until his death in 1888 about 60 miles (100 km) northeast of Greeneville on Outer Banks Island off Cape Fear Harbor. One result of this change was that many nonnative Americans started moving into town from outlying areas - some founded their own towns such as New Bern or Wilmington while others followed Fenton into downtown business districts such as Market Street or Haymarket Square etc..
