The first guns that were cleaned here were handguns and shotguns. In 1925, the Payne Shop closed due to lack of business and was replaced by the current business, including today’s building, which was built in 1912. The company changed hands a few times before it came to ownership by J.C. Gibson in 1934 and continued to be run by him until his death in 1967. From 1967-1974, Joe Clements ran the business from his home on Park Avenue until he moved out of town and sold the shop to George Burden who operated it for thirty years before selling it back to Joe Clements’ son in 2000. After Joseph Clements’ death, John Burden took over as manager of the shop until he retired in 2006 after more than sixty years of service at this location. Today, Wayne Pugh is the Manager/Owner of The Payne Shop & gunsmithing center located inside Waynesville Community College where he has been since 1978 when he purchased it from Mrs.(Mrs.) (Nancy) (Dixon) Pyatt who had been running it as a private residence for many years prior thereto The primary use for firearms cleaning products throughout most of their history has been shooting sports; however, there are also occasional uses for such items as repairs or replacements on personal weapons or hunting rifles that may require special care not typically provided for other types of firearms In 1892 , E W Payne opened his own gunsmithing store on Main street . MR JOSEPH CLEMENT HAD OWNED AND OPERATED THE ESTATE FOR A FEW YEARS BEFORE HE MADE A DECISION TO MOVETO HIS HOME ON PARK AVENUE WHERE HE BEQUeathed THE BUSINESS TO HIS SON JOHN BUMBLEBEE WHO CONTINUED TO OPERATE IT FROM HIS HOME UNTIL HIS DEATH IN 1967 . BEFORE JOEL CONNOR took OVER FROM HIM AS MANAGER AFTER JMCLEMENTS DIED THERE WERE THREE MEN THAT WORKED HERE AT ANY ONE TIME: GEORGE BURDEN(1927-1938), JOHN BURREN(1939-1946), AND WILLIAM STRAIGHT(1947-1950). AFTER JOHN BURREN'S DEATH WEATHER CHANGE MEANT HIM NO LONGER GETTING paid so HE SAT OUT AN ADDITIONAL TWO YEARS WHILE THEY CONSIDERING SELLING IT BACK BUT DECIDED NOT TO AS THEY BELieved THAT WITH TIME SOMEONE WILL CONNECT WITH USHERING BACK THE TRADITION OF CLEANING GUNS IN WAYNESVILLE After Mr Joseph Clement's death in1967 an attempt was made to sell but due to no one being interested they decided not to sell it back instead they believed someone would bring back the tradition of cleaning guns in waynesville
