Washington is a town in Durham County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Durham Metropolitan Statistical Area. Washington was founded in 1819 by General William Troup and his wife Sophia Smith. The first white settler in what is now Washington was John Atkin who arrived in 1793. In 1830, Washington had 1 store and 6 homes. By 1840, there were 10 stores and 100 homes with a population of over 350 people. In 1851, Washington became an independent town when it seceded from Durham County to form its own government. On July 4th of that year, the town held a parade to celebrate its independence which included local militia as well as cannons brought from nearby Raleigh. Afterward, the town elected George Withers as their first mayor and post office opened on October 12th of that year with Withers serving until 1865 when he resigned due to military duty in Tennessee. In 1865, Washington became part of the new state of North Carolina when it was created out of parts of Virginia and South Carolina following the American Civil War

The first white person to set foot on the land that would become North Carolina was Captain John Smith in 1619. The area that is now North Carolina was part of Virginia at the time, and so the first European settlers were not from North Carolina.
