It is the smallest incorporated community in Chatham County and one of the few remaining rural towns in the state. Washington was founded by Captain John Smith on November 15, 1753 as part of his expedition to find a route to India. The first white settler in Washington was Elias Denton who arrived around 1820. His home still stands and is currently used as a museum. James Caldwell also settled here about 1830; he built a cabin on what is now US-19/Chatham Road. In 1840, prominent lawyer and politician David Cushing bought land in Washington from John Cushing for $5 per acre. He called it "Curry's Valley". In the early days of American settlement there were only two stores and no schools or churches in Washington. The first post office was established near present day Cypressville on December 6, 1821; it operated until January 3, 1865 when it changed its name to Mount Vernon because General George Rogers Clark had visited Mount Vernon while campaigning for president that year. In 1840, Governor Tryon orderedCaptain Elisha Scott to arrest all men living west of Roanoke Island without due process of law under Order No XXVIII which forbade any slaveholders from assisting British forces during the war against France
