The history of shooting target holders in Washington, North Carolina is extensive. Shooting target holders have been used by residents of the area for centuries, and the practice has continued to this day. One of the earliest shooting targets that was held at a local location was a large oak tree near present-day Hickory Mill. The tree served as a central spot for firing arrows at targets set up along the creek bed. From here, shooters could easily see where their arrow had penetrated the wood and knew how well they were doing. The first gunsmith in Washington County was James Fenton who worked from 1814 to 1816. In 1824, John Aiken purchased land adjacent to Lumberton on which he built his home known as “Aiken’s Grove” overlooking the creek that ran through his property. With this site as a base of operations, Aiken began Sale Archery Training School in 1830 which taught people how to shoot arrows with guns and shotguns. The school also provided training for local farmers in how to use these firearms to target shoot. In 1840, George Ransom started sellingTarget Hangers at his store on US 11 near modern-day Greenville Junction. These hangers Provided stability while holding onto an object so that shooters could shoot accurately at long ranges without having their bow fall off or getting covered in Arrows shot by others around them! After years of successful business, Ransom decided to close his store due to economic reasons but not before leaving behind an lasting legacy that continues today! By 1870, there were over 100 Target Hangers operating throughout Washington County! By 1941 there only remained six operational Target Hangers left in North Carolina! These6 hanger operated out of four businesses: Pritchard’s Store (in Gastonia), Waddell & Sons(in Chapel Hill), Daughtry Bros.(in Wilmington) and Brown & Co.(in Carrboro). Unfortunately, all six businesses closed within 5 years due largely towards World War II and subsequent rationing of ammunition!! Each business produced its own type of Target Holder-Pritchard’s Holder being made from solid brass with adjustable tube height; Waddell & Sons using iron tubes with 1898Centered bullseye sights; Daughtry Bros using iron posts with 1913 cockpits; Brown & Co., using galvanized steel plates with 1913 cockpits/adjustable height….These different types allowed each business owner more flexibility when it came time to produce their particular product All told there are now just 2 remaining Target Holder manufacturers left- both being made completely utilizing plastic materials!!!

It wasn't until 1840 that Congress passed legislation establishing Washington Parish within Buncombe County so that residents there could vote not just for local officials but also for Representatives to Congress via Special Election held every two years rather than wait for general elections every six years like everyone else in South Carolina at that time (the legislature continued meeting at Austin until 1861 because no other location would hold up permissions from several locally elected officials combined with conflicts with meetings at large buildings like State Capitol).
