The fort served as a major logistical center for Confederate Forces during the Civil War and remained in service until 1865 when it was surrendered by Union troops.

Many men fromWashington took up arms against their southern counterparts and helped lead what is known as the Battle of Bull Run (1861). Aftermath of that battle left more than 130 dead on both sides and drove much of Raleigh into hiding; only about 25 percent of original Wilsonville remained by 1865. 2 blocks east of where I live stands Fort Bragg which also played an important role during this time period
